Tucker - The Man and His Dream List Price: $9.98 Sale Price: $22.89 Average Rating: ![]() |

Director Francis Ford Coppola and executive producer George Lucas shared a strong desire to film the story of Preston Tucker, the man who revolutionized car design in the late 1940s, only to have his innovation squelched by the "big three" automakers in a legal battle between Tucker and powerful political lobbies. Coppola surely related to and sympathized with Tucker as a visionary underdog, and so this stylish, energetic film envisions "the man and his dream" in idealistic terms--an unabashed optimist (played by Jeff Bridges) who realizes his vision through blind faith and tenacity. Martin Landau gives a superb, heartbreaking performance as an associate who desperately wants to share Tucker's enthusiasm, but knows that corporate wolves are knocking at the door and will soon burst in with fangs bared. Joan Allen is equally good as Tucker's supportive wife, and the film's combination of dazzling costumes, production design, and the fabulous Tucker itself (of which only 50 models were made) creates an infectious atmosphere of postwar optimism. In the end, however, this fascinating film is much like Coppola himself: possessed of genius, blinded by ambition, and prone to create works of erratic brilliance. Don't take that as criticism, however; this is a sharp, underrated film about a dreamer whose dream was a worthy one, even if it only briefly came true. --Jeff Shannon THE STORY OF PRESTON TUCKER, THE MAVERICK CAR DESIGNER AND HISILL FATED CHALLENGE TO THE AUTO INDUSTRY WITH HIS REVOLUTIONARY CAR CONCEPT. |

Roberta List Price: $19.98 Sale Price: $8.99 Average Rating: ![]() |

When Huck Haines (Fred Astaire) and his jazz band of Wabash Indianians find themselves stuck in Paris without a paying gig, it's up to his buddy John (Randolph Scott) to appeal to his aunt, the legendary dressmaker Roberta (Helen Westley), for help. He also finds a Russian princess (Irene Dunne) working in the shop and a down-home American girl (Ginger Rogers) masquerading as a Polish countess because it's the best way to get a singing job. Roberta was the third RKO collaboration between Astaire and Rogers, and it's one of the more tepid, with too much time spent on 1930s Parisian fashion and the romance between Dunne and Scott. Dunne gets top billing and the best Jerome Kern ballads ("Yesterdays," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"), but as the second-banana couple Astaire and Rogers still get a tap battle, a romantic duet, and plenty of comic banter. In short, the Fred and Ginger magic is there, but not nearly enough of it. For more, watch the films immediately preceding and succeeding, The Gay Divorcee and Top Hat. --David Horiuchi No Description Available.Genre: MusicalsRating: NRRelease Date: 24-OCT-2006Media Type: DVD |

Volvo Xc70 Makes Appearance at Ispo Sport & Style
Swedish auto manufacturer Volvo recently showed off the all-new Volvo XC70 at this year’s ispo Sport & Style trade show in Munich. The redesigned Volvo XC70 midsize executive car was displayed from the eighth to the tenth of this month in Germany.
The appearance of the redesigned Volvo XC70 at the trade show is considered as a natural step for Volvo to take. In promoting the Volvo XC70, the Swedish car manufacturer is stressing on the adventurous designs of the XC70. This is in consonance with the thirst for adventure of more than 30,000 visitors of the trade show.
The inclination of the XC70 towards adventure is stressed out by Les Kerssemakkers, SVP Brand, Business and Product Strategy. Kerssemakkers said: “The new Volvo XC70 has been developed for people who want to realize their dreams. It has the right attitude, capacity, and equipment for enjoyable drives to and from adventure.”
This is not the first time that the Swedish car manufacturer has made an appearance at the trade show. Through the years, the participation of Volvo in the said trade show has been increasing. During the winter ispo, Volvo has teamed up with the organizers to bring the Volvo Sports Design Forum to the event.
Another of Volvo’s involvement with the trade show is evident in the observance of the Volvo Sports Design Award given to awardees since 2003. The award is aimed to let young sports designer to showcase their work. The award of course would give them a boost in the right direction. This year, the theme given to young designers to work on is personalization, something that Volvo tends to include in their vehicles, whether in choosing a Volvo air filter or the exterior color.
One of the winners this year is the Swiss bicycle expert BCM for designing a radical bicycle. The said bicycle is called the Pro Machine SLC01. It was displayed on the roof of the XC70. The placing of the bicycle atop the XC70 is in order to show its true defining quality. With a custom-made bike frame weighing less than a kilogram, the bicycle on top of the XC70 is truly a striking sight.
“I like this bike because it is so easy to personalize,” says Jonathan Disley, Studio Chief Designer at Volvo Car Corporation of the award-winning bicycle. Disley was a member of the 2007 Sports Design Award.
The presence of the XC70 at the trade show according to Disley is an effort for the company to promote the redesigned XC70. “We strive to show our cars and our way of thinking to a design interested audience,” said Disley. “In the last years, we have been active in the Milan furniture show, at the fashion weeks in Paris and Moscow and of course, at the ispo Sports Design in Europe and China.”
The appearance of a Volvo exhibit at the trade show has two-fold benefit for the car manufacturer. First, the XC70 receives exposure. More consumers will be able to meet the new XC70. The second benefit is that Volvo designers will be able to get design inspiration from the trade show they attended. After all, Volvo designers are known to not limit themselves to look for inspiration inside the auto industry.
“I simply thrive when I can look at great design from a totally different industry and get enthusiastic over a line here or a detail there,” said Disley of the chance to get inspiration from other areas apart from the automotive scene.

Is it sensible to wear my designer sunglasses while I run, or should I only wear sunglasses made for sport?
I'm a runner, and I don't really own a pair of 'sports sunglasses'... I do have a couple of cheapy sunglasses lying around in my house, but they dont fit my face super well.
Right now I don't really have the money to buy nice sports sunglasses (I don't like buying cheap stuff anyway, I'd rather save to buy a nice pair of Oakleys I really like)
I bought myself a new pair of Gucci sunglasses the other day, and was wondering, would it be suitable to wear them while running? Perhaps only on easy runs only and not during training? Maybe even during speed training too? Or would it really be bad to wear them at all?
All I figure could happen is that sweat would get on them, but that it can be washed off afterward!
But I notice most people don't wear their designer sunglasses while doing these sports... What do you think?
Is it silly to wear these nice glasses during runs, or is it something normal?
I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing your nice sunglasses. As long as it's comfortable for you, go ahead. Lots of people run with sunglasses because it relaxes them.
